Spring 2012
Dear Dixie Elementary School Families:
Although it’s hard to believe, we are in the final trimester of the school year! Just around the corner…Dixie Variety Show, Spring Break, STAR Testing, Walker Creek, and 5th grade graduation! It’s been a successful year in many ways and I look forward to all the excitement of our year-end activities and events.
Beginning April 1st, we will be asking all parents to complete an on-line Dixie School Survey. Information collected will let us know how satisfied you are with your child’s experience. Staff, site council, and our school board created the questions and they cover areas related to curriculum, behavior, communication and more. All four schools will be conducting the survey and results will help guide our school improvement goal setting for next year.
Our Can Do! Family Giving Campaign has come to a close for the 2011/2012 school-year. Dixie Elementary participation was at record levels in all grades and stands at 88% school wide. Your Can Do! contributions support art, music, drama, technology and PE! The annual Can Do!/Scotty’s Market Golf Tournament takes place on May 4th. Please check out the Can Do! Website for ways you can be involved.
As mentioned in several DixiE-News editions, staff and I are beginning the process of planning for next year and will soon begin designing classes based on enrollment projections. As per Board Policy, the teaching staff and principal share the responsibility for student placement. The teachers meet by grade levels before the end of the year to develop classes. Classes will be designed based upon the following criteria:
- Ratio of boys to girls/Overall number
- Students with special needs
- Second language learners
- Learning styles
- Social/Emotional needs
- Citizenship
Parent requests will be considered if the request is based upon clear-cut educational and/or developmental needs (per board policy). All requests must be received between May 1st and May 31st and be in writing to me. Accommodations will not be made to place your student in a class with a particular teacher or with friends.
The key ingredient to this process is trust. You need to trust that we will do the best job possible in placing your student with all the information at our disposal. We do the best job we can because it is important to us that each child has the optimum chance for learning, growth and success.
As the year comes to a close I want to extend my thanks to everyone who has made my first year here so special! Every stakeholder in the Dixie Elementary Community (Dixie Home and School Club, Site Council, Dixie Connect, Dixie Arts Council, Can Do!, and the outstanding Dixie Staff) works to provide the best learning experience for every student! It is truly an honor to help guide Dixie School! I’d like to extend a special thank you to our parent volunteers and the parent leaders who help move our school forward this year. Don’t forget to continue reading our weekly DixiE-news to keep up with all the goings-on. My door remains open if you have questions or concerns.
Much Aloha,
